San Francisco Bay water enters the coastal ocean via the narrow Golden Gate. The resulting plume, which is a is a mix of ocean water that enters the Bay on the flood tide and fresh water that has been processed within the estuary, flows into the ecologically sensitive Gulf of the Farallones. Working with the San Francisco Estuary Institute, we want to determine the influence that anthropogenic impacts (e.g., nutrient inputs) have on the Gulf ecosystem.
We are performing a series of nested numerical simulations using ROMS in order to answer the question. A publication on the physical modelling work (Zhou et al.) is due to be submitted shortly (with co-authors as of summer 2022).
