My niece interviewed me as part of a high school science project. You can find a summary of that interview here: "An Interview with an Oceanographer"

With a background in both ocean and atmospheric sciences, I consider myself an “earth-system scientist”. As such, I am interested in a range of topics, with particular interest in the interaction between different components of the earth system.
In October 2020, I started a post-doc position at University of California, Santa Cruz under the guidance of Prof Chris Edwards to support the development of biogeochemical models, including the implementation of novel data-assimilation techniques. I completed my PhD (cum laude) at the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands (09/16-09/20). My research focused on understanding the onset and evolution of fog. Prior to starting my PhD studies, I obtained my BSc in physics and ocean sciences (ocean-atmosphere dynamics) at the University of Victoria (2010-2014) on Canada's west coast. I then moved east for my MSc in oceanography at Dalhousie University (2014-2016). |
Personal
My wife, Maaike, works at the Herzberg Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (Victoria, Canada), researching control techniques for astronomy adaptive optics systems. I am also very fortunate to have a twin brother, Robert, who is a sea-going biogeochemical oceanographer working as a post-doc at Dalhousie University (check out his website here).
I use he/him/his pronouns.
When not working, I enjoy getting outside and doing a number of activities: cycling, hiking, kayaking, playing football (soccer). That being said, don't be surprised to find me inside with a good book!
